The stat excavator at Pew dug upa new gem : in their across the nation representative survey , “ 13 % of cell owners pretended to be using their earpiece so as to forefend interact with the people around them . ” This seems very , very low .
Part of the beauty of the ubiquitous earpiece is the omnipresent alibi . See someone walk down the sidewalk who you ’d wish to avoid ? Say , an honest-to-goodness college conversancy to whom you have nothing at all to say ? And never did ? And kind of always hat ? Out comes the earphone ! I have a smashing scripted fake phone call script , always sound like some pressing news has just been relayed to me :
What ? She enounce that ? Are you certain ? Okay — I’m on my mode . Well , just wait . Oh , wow — okay I ’m coming right now .

Etc . And it always works ! The phone , a gadget for communication , is just as wondrously utilitarian atblocking communicating . And in a order where constant communication becomes an arithmetic mean , being able-bodied to tacitly say I tilt TALK TO YOU RIGHT NOW , sans rudeness , is fantastic . And I know I ’m not alone .

So what ’s up , Pew ? Just 13 % ? We love your employment , and trust your methodology , but I have a flavor not everyone was honest with you this time around . I think 60 % sounds a little more exact . Or one hundred . [ Pew Internet , Thanks Nicko ! ]
