Ralph Steinman , a 68 - year - old Canadian scientist , was just award the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discoveries regarding our resistant arrangement . Huge honor ! adult celebration ! Not exactly . Steinman passed away due to pancreatic genus Cancer three day ago . The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute had no mind and now might take his honor away .
Steinman was awarded the prize for his 1973 discovery where he incur a new cadre type , the dendritic cadre . Dendritic cell activate T - cubicle and had a of import role in baffle adaptative unsusceptibility , or “ when antibodies and sea wolf cells campaign infections ” . The cells build up a sorting of memory that help the immune arrangement well organise itself for the next onset . passably interesting stuff !
The Nobel Foundation think so too , that ’s why they gave him the awarding today . But here ’s where the story takes an ugly round . Since Steinman ’s been dead for three days already , the Nobel dirty money originally awarded to him might be take off from him . As in rescinded , nullified , bygone . Why ?

Because Nobel statutes do n’t let for posthumous awards .
They do make way for people who pass aside after the official declaration but before the December 10th award observance , but as Steinman died before the announcement entirely , he might lose out on the award because he was technically ineligible . The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet , the people who resolve who gain the Nobel Prize in practice of medicine , will have to reconvene to make up one’s mind on what to do but hopefully , they make an exclusion as it ’s more their fault for not have it off Steinman had passed than Steinman ’s error for die .
