If you thought stunning images of nebulous gas clouds in space could n’t get any prettier , think again . Finnish astrophotographerJ - P Metsävainiohas combined art and science to make these stunning 3-D - esque liven up GIFs of nebulae .
He use a technique known as volumetric rotation to create a sense of three-D : by using known and approximate distance of stars in the image , it ’s possible to work out where they fall in recounting the cloud itself , and hence create a pseudo-3D image . Metsävainio excuse :
“ I use a ‘ formula of thumb ’ method acting for stars : brighter is near , but if a real length is known , I ’m using that . Many 3D shapes can be figured out just by looking cautiously the social organization in nebula , such as dark nebulae must be at front of the discharge nebulae to show up etc … the ecumenical structure of many star forming regions is very same , there is a group of young stars , as an capable cluster inside of the nebula . the astral flatus from the star is then blow the gas aside around the cluster and shape a kind of cavitation – or a hole – around it . the pillar - similar organization in the nebula must point to a seed of stellar wind , for the same ground . ”
