Box jellyfish are n’t content just to bebrainless , squishy , prick bastards . It turn out they havebewilderingly interesting vision systems , too . They have 24 optic of four unlike types — including a set entirely used for peering into the sky .
The research await at Tripedalia cystophora , which live in the root of Rhizophora mangle swamps in the Caribbean . The jellyfish must dumbfound to a couple of square meters beneath the canopies , where their fair game inhabit , or they ’ll bear starving in the open weewee .
So , how do the jellyfish stay in the proper place ? They expend their “ upper lens middle , ” four eyes which can see through the water ’s surface and into the space above . These eyes allow them to spot the mangrove canopy at distances of at least eight meter , and sail towards them . With the canopy obscured , they were lost . These oculus can go around in any focal point , and are suspended in the gossamer tissue paper of the jellyfishes ’ bodies .
