Whilethis imageof the 1954 “ computer of the future ” is a hoax that still manages to pop up whenever the topic turns to paleo - futurism , I of late arrive across a uproarious quote from the 1970 bookThe End of the Twentieth Century?along much the same melody of thinking .
This extract , from page 71 , illustrates the lack of imagination we often have when it come to technology and think exponentially :
“ Computers will gain even more than phone from the development of structured circuits in ever smaller ‘ chips ’ , and very small-scale computers may emerge . Most computing equipment will in all likelihood still occupy a large elbow room , however , because of the blank space needed for the appurtenant software – the tapes and cards to be flow in , the operating staff , and the immense tons of paper for printing out the results . But future information processing system , though no small , will be capable of doing far more than their predecessors .
