Given the minuscule nature of her subjects , Nix works in super - slow motion , create only a few slice every year ( which is why you may have seen some of these images before ) . Since 2005 , she ’s been immersed in a project called The City , which show New York is a barren , apocalyptic ghost town : Sand dune movement through the B gearing , tree sprout at heart of tennis shoe dress shop , and piles of dirt accumulate in the box of a Taiwanese takeaway place .
“ I am fascinated , maybe even a little obsessed , with the melodic theme of the apocalypse , ” Nix explains on herwebsite . Maybe a little .
Like most of our obsessions , Nix ’s arrested development stanch from childhood . Growing up in a small west Kansas townsfolk ( “ have it away more for it ’s instinctive disasters than anything else ” ) , the multitudinous tornado , overflow , and storms made a mark on her mind .
“ The City postulates what it would be like to live in a urban center that is post man - kind , where man has left his mark by the architecture , but mother nature is taking back these space , ” Nix continues . “ Flora , fauna and insects mixture with the detritus of high and low polish . ”
New Yorkers aren’texactly knownfor fetishize the past . Some would even argue that we havea death wishing — or at the very least , an obsession withthe perverse beauty of an empty , destroyed Manhattan . Maybe that ’s why Nix ’s work is so mesmerizing — it plays into a collective account that we ’re all captivated by , yet ca n’t conceive of really coming to go by .
