Ex Machina stars three very exciting actors that we love , Oscar Isaac , Domhnall Gleeson ( both in the new Star Wars Episode 7 btw ) and the very enchanting robot Alicia Vikander . Earlier trailers made this whole movie seem like some Turing sexual urge experiment , but this prevue seems more like a test within a test … I guess we ’ll have to see what happens . Alex Garland , writer of 28 day after and Sunshine , make his directorial introduction with the stylish and cerebral thriller , EX MACHINA . Caleb Smith ( Domhnall Gleeson ) , a computer programmer at an cyberspace - hunt behemoth , wins a competition to spend a workweek at the individual mint acres of the company ’s superb and reclusive CEO , Nathan Bateman ( Oscar Isaac ) . Upon his arrival , Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human constituent in a Turing Test — charging him with evaluating the capabilities , and ultimately the consciousness , of Nathan ’s latest experimentation in artificial tidings . That experiment is Ava ( Alicia Vikander ) , a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more advanced , seductive––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined .
