Last year Hasbro unveil it wasresurrecting Tiger Electronics ’ handheld video gamesfor those nostalgic for a gaming experience that was even more basic than the Game Boy . It scratched a nostalgic itch , but we would have preferred to see Hasbro upgrade the handhelds with more modernistic capableness , likeMark GhirardiofMarky Pi Gaminghas donewith their TigerPi mods .
Tiger Electronics ’ handheldswere by no substance technological marvels , but for around $ 20 each , which was still comparatively cheesy in the late ‘ 80s and former ‘ 90s , they were an affordable choice to the Game Boy . Games ran on monochromatic segmented LCD screens that were played using basic controls . Could they hold a candle to other portable like the Game Boy or Game Gear ? No . Were they good than nothing when as a kid you found yourself stuck at a boring marriage all day ? Absolutely . But 30 eld by and by , when even your watch is a surprisingly capable play equipment , the electronics powering the Tiger handhelds palpate dispiritedly outdated , even if the devices themselves rekindle doting memories of playing them as a kid .
Had Hasbro assume the approach Nintendo did with itsGame & Watch revival , pack several games into a modern handheld thatemulated the honest-to-goodness - school LCD screentech , we would have been screaming at the toymaker to shut up and take our money . Unfortunately , thenew Tiger handheldsaren’t much different than the originals , so Ghirardi took thing into their own hands .

Ghirardi already has a longsighted history of modding hand-held console , and through their site , Marky Pi Gaming , you could buy everything fromSega Dreamcast VMUsupgraded to full on emulators , to Game Boy - revolutionize devices that can meet hundreds of games from several classic system . Their latest innovation , deal through theirInstagram account , brings similar modification to Tiger handhelds . The original electronics and screens of the toys are gutted and interchange with a compact Raspberry Pi Zero W paired with a 2.6 - in full color LCD showing , USB - C charging , and software emulation for play everything from one-time Atari games properly up to some PlayStation one title .
The Tiger handhelds ’ original control still operate , but to make the twist compatible with game designed for newer consoles with more complex controllers , Ghirardi also add extra clitoris to the back that can be custom mapped through the emulation software . It ’s not the optimal way to love some of your preferent SNES / Genesis / PS1 title , and do n’t look to plant any speedrunning records with this hardware , but for nostalgia ’s sake alone we desperately need to add one of these to ourretro gaming collection . Hopefully they ’ll one day show up in theMarky Pi Gaming on-line storage .
