The sun let out a massive solar flare yesterday , in all probability resulting in two volatile coronal mass ejections ( CME ) . The actinotherapy headed right for Earth and interfered with some gamy - oftenness wireless communications for about an minute . The legal age of Earthlings were completely untouched by this event , as the major planet ’s magnetosphere protect us from the brunt of the equipment casualty . Instead of the CME making Earthcompletely inhospitable like Venus , the particles are for the most part avert .

Evidence of the magnetosphere ’s protection can be seen at the North and South poles in the form of discolor lights known asauroras . Aurora Borealis is seen in the North , while Aurora Australis occurs in the South . Charged CME particles that have been trapped by the magnetic battleground travel toward the poles and excite oxygen and nitrogen in the upper atmosphere . As the elements return to their ground state , they kick off a photon that creates colored illumination . Oxygen produces green and sensationalistic illumination , while nitrogen is responsible for gentle or red .

Yesterday ’s eventwas a mighty X1.6 class , which is the strongest class of solar flare . Because of the strength , it is betoken that there will be some gorgeous aurora tonight ( Sept 11 ) and tomorrow as a result . Though prime viewing of auroras typically occur in the northerly - most constituent of the United States and up into Canada , it ispredictedthat those as far south as Pennsylvania and Iowa could possibly see the Northern Lights .

However , the CME stemming from the solar flare were so vivid   that theNOAA Space Weather Prediction Centerhas issued a watch for a G2 ( moderate ) geomagnetic storm on September 12 , with a watch for a G3 ( firm ) geomagnetic violent storm on September 13 . These storm temporarily affect the magnetised field , causing an inflow of energy .

There ’s no need to panic about the storm though , as it ’s still just a “ sentinel ” at   of the time of this writing . Astronauts and pilots at mellow altitudes could be exposed to additional radiation , but those of us with our foot on the primer should stay perfectly safe . There is thepossibilitythat great power grid and satellites used for navigation and communication could be damaged . NOAA SWPCwill provide updated info as it come in .

A few week ago , the ESA released a video of spaceman aboard the ISS fly over an cockcrow . It ’s middling badass , you shouldgo check it .
